This 14 acre site was once the Cactus Drive In Theater in Albuquerque. The Master Plan for the site was developed with the involvement of the neighbors at public meetings, research on the available facilities in the area, demographic studies, and a thorough site analysis. The placement of the play fields to minimize grading established the basis for the plan. Pedestrian connections to surrounding housing, businesses, and bus stops tie the plan together. Parking will be developed as part of the phasing scheme. Phase 1 design included the basketball courts, multi-purpose building, ash tree grove, tot lot and parking. Subsequent phases will include a gymnasium, volleyball courts, play fields and additional parking. The design of the Phase 1 Multi-Purpose Building faces an outdoor court to the dramatic view of the mountains. The interiors were planned to maximize the use of natural light while not subjecting the building to vandalism. Materials selected will take heavy use without showing wear.
