Ron Romero Construction
The Hope Building was constructed in 1894 on an interior lot in Downtown Albuquerque.
In 1979, the Hope Building was purchased by Preservation Partnership (Cherry/See, Architects and Susan Johnson) and renovation plans for the structure were begun. Cherry/See, Architects, designed the renovation and Tom Duncan did the construction work. Funding was covered in part by a grant from the New Mexico Historic Preservation bureau and assistance from Albuquerque Center, Inc.
Restoration of the north facade included removal of stucco added to the first floor in the 1950's. The large arches were uncovered and brick work was replaced, patched and repainted. Aluminum door and window frames were replaced with oak which was similar to the original.
No record remains of the original interior. The first floor renovation included new lighting, heating, a new wainscot, carpet, a pressed metal ceiling and paint. The first floor was made accessible to the handicapped.
The renovation has received The Albuquerque Conservation Association's Bainbridge Bunting Award of Merit and the New Mexico Society of Architects Award of Merit.
In 1982 the building ownership was assumed by The Hope Building Joint Venture (Cherry/See, Architects and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra).
