Chaparral Elementary School Kindergarten/Classroom Addition
As an ISP magnet school, Chaparral is home to children with a wide range of abilities. Many children are medically fragile and require specialized equipment and space considerations in which to learn. Additionally, the original school was built to accommodate 650 students and current enrollment fluctuates between 800 and 900. The facilities were undersized and poorly equipped to handle the large and unique population of the school.
Our design adds a new classroom building with a variety of regular education, kindergarten and ISP rooms. We worked closely with the teachers and staff to ensure that the building orientation, classroom adjacencies and classroom layouts facilitated a superior learning environment while also utilizing sustainable design techniques to lower operating costs.
The kitchen and cafeteria were also grossly undersized for the population. We extended the space to increase both the cafeteria and the kitchen. This allowed for a modern kitchen layout which should reduce wait time by 50%.
Redesign of site access and parking now allow for clear delineation between bus, special education bus, kindergarten and parent pick up and drop off zones in addition to a gated loading zone.
